Description

Amitabh Sengupta | Reminiscent Zone | Oil on Canvas | 33.6 x 33.6 inches | 2004 (Rolled & Delivered)

This painting depicts a hauntingly beautiful scene of architectural ruins bathed in a warm, golden light. The artist has captured a deserted structure—its arched doorways and stone walls suggesting an ancient fort or monastery—standing silent amid a barren, ochre-toned landscape. Large, flat stone slabs lead the viewer’s eye deeper into the composition, creating a pathway that invites reflection and evokes a sense of passage through time. The play of light and shadow on the textured surfaces conveys both decay and endurance, while the open sky with scattered clouds adds a touch of serenity to the otherwise melancholic atmosphere. Through this work, the artist beautifully merges memory, space, and emotion, turning an abandoned site into a poetic meditation on history, loss, and the remnants of human presence.

Born in Calcutta in 1941, Amitabh Sengupta graduated in Painting from Govt. College of Arts & Crafts, Calcutta, in 1963. Between 1966 and 1969, he received a French Government Scholarship and studied Painting and Graphics in Paris. After spending six years in Chennai and Delhi, Amitabh went to Paris in 1976.

Amitabh received his Ed.M. from the State University of New York at Buffalo and taught art at two universities in Nigeria for eleven years, eventually becoming the Head of Visual Arts at the University of Port-Harcourt. His paintings are shown in India, Nigeria, the USA, Europe and the Far East. He has published four books in UK and India. He lives and works in Alipurduar in West Bengal.
