Description

Ganapati Hedge | Ms. Pelican’ – from Life in Nature Series | Acrylic & Ink in Handmade Paper | 32 x 12 inches (Unframed & Delivered)

This elegant painting presents a stylized depiction of a pelican, gracefully rendered within a composition that merges nature, symbolism, and design. The bird stands serenely amidst a tapestry of delicate leaves, flowers, and branches, its poised form adorned with intricate patterns that resemble ornate textiles. The artist employs a muted palette of gold, bronze, and earthy browns, lending the work a sense of warmth and timeless sophistication. The background’s subtle gradient and textured surface enhance the handmade quality of the paper, while the fine detailing of the flora and the bird’s plumage reveal a deep reverence for nature’s beauty and harmony. The halo-like form behind the pelican’s head adds a spiritual or sacred aura, suggesting the coexistence of grace and divinity in the natural world. The artwork beautifully bridges realism and stylization, evoking both tranquility and reverence through its refined composition and meditative balance.

Ganapati Hegde was born in Kumta, in the Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka in 1974.

Ganapati Hegde paints half-real, half-imagined worlds, layered with fantastical and unexpected elements that depict the rapturously green and radiant landscape of North Karnataka’s coast where he grew up.

Hegde’s otherworldly jungle is full of interesting minutiae, and is inhabited by nature’s assorted residents, from caterpillars and chameleons to monkeys and butterflies, alongside a profusion of foliage painted in bright blues, reds, greens and lavenders. Amidst the lushness of Hegde’s vibrant acrylic and oil canvases sit sly anthropomorphic animals and familiar urban objects, including laptops, flags and furniture. While nature and its furry, feathery, and floral protagonists remain centre stage, an undercurrent of fable-like storytelling and sharp wit ripples through his work, compelling viewers to dig beneath the thicket of indigenous plants, flowers, birds, animals and insects.
