Founded in 2004, Gallery Kolkata emerged during a time when art patrons were few and far between in the city. Meghna Agarwala was introduced to the Maestro Ganesh Pyne by the famed artist Shuvaprasanna. Pyne, with a hint of skepticism, had mused, “Art doesn’t sell in Kolkata. Why must you do anything here?” To which Meghna had passionately replied, “No, dada. I want to showcase art for the love of it.”
With modest expectations and unyielding passion, Meghna sought to make the masterworks accessible to the younger generation. Gallery Kolkata quickly became a beacon, bridging the gap between creative talent and discerning patrons.
After hosting numerous exhibitions at esteemed venues such as the informal Home Gallery, Bengal Business Chamber, Hyatt Regency, and The Palladium Lounge, Meghna recognized the need for a dedicated infrastructure and a permanent address for art enthusiasts and artists.
In 2007, Gallery Kolkata was formally inaugurated by the Master Artist of Bengal Jogen Choudhury in the presence of Suhas Roy , Sunil Das , Rabin Mondal , Wasim Kapoor in the presence of the City’s art critics , Dancers , Poets , Writers , & various other intellectuals & Cognoscenti of Kolkata .
The Space – a space with the state-of-the-art infrastructure in the heart of Kolkata, on Shakespeare Sarani, within the prestigious “Duckback House.” Boasting an enviable 5000 sq. ft. space and easy accessibility, the gallery became a distinguished destination for art, music, culture, and dance.
The gallery has hosted landmark exhibitions, installation art, video shows, and new media displays. Beyond Fine arts, the gallery also ventured into art furniture, crafted from recycled wood and materials.
Over the years, Gallery Kolkata has presented numerous thoughtfully curated solo and group exhibitions, curated by renowned curators and scholars, meticulously documented and showcased in aesthetically produced catalogues. Noteworthy exhibitions include “Mother and Child,” “Contemporary Art and Creative Furniture,” “Image of One’s Self,” “Kothao Tomar Hariye Jabar Neyi Mana, Mone Mone” (a solo show of Kartick Chandra Pyne), and the 2015 exhibition titled “War or Peace: Remembering 100 Years of World War II,” curated by Mrinal Ghosh.
The gallery brought pivotal attention to the artworks of artists like Sunil Das in a show called “Beware- Beaware” of the Art of Sunil. This exhibition aimed to educate viewers and collectors on how to differentiate genuine works from counterfeits. Further, a posthumous retrospective was held in an exhibition titled “Restless Creativity.”
In its 15th year, the gallery showcased curated shows called “Southern Diaries,” featuring works of Badri Narayan, Thota Vaikuntam, and JMS Mani. Meghna Agarwala has a discerning eye for art and an uncanny ability to identify and nurture emerging talents.
